Reaffirming that birth is a natural event, hypnobirthing is a set of birthing techniques that enable a mother to approach labour without fear and to believe that the birth of her baby will be a positive and empowering experience.
The “hypno” part of hypnobirthing refers to the self-hypnosis that is practiced during pregnancy and is used during labour to help the mother relax, believe in her body and her baby, release the beta-endorphins that will help her to cope with the surges and then to euphorically bond with her baby. The self-hypnosis brings about a deep, meditative state in which the mother is in tune with her birthing, feels confident and in control and is less likely to require interventions during the birth process.
A calm and natural birth was considered normal for thousands of years. In fact, it has only been in the past 100 years that birth has become medicalised. Hypnobirthing takes the fundamental, mammalian method of giving birth and places it in the modern context, providing mothers and birth partners with strategies that enable them to use ancient birthing practices in the current environment.
These strategies include not only breathing techniques, relaxation exercises, affirmations and visualizations, but also empowering the birthing partners to feel confident in their role. In hypnobirthing, the birth partners truly are partners. They serve to physically and emotionally support the mother as well as to act as an advocate for her and the baby. Hypnobirthing can be a wonderfully inclusive approach to birth; the bond that develops between the mother, the birth partner and the baby over the course of the pregnancy and during the birth is one of the most rewarding aspects of hypnobirthing.
Pregnancy and birth should be embraced and enjoyed as fulfilling, empowering events. Hypnobirthing is as much a philosophy of the power of thinking positively about pregnancy and birth as it is knowledge, techniques, and support. As a hypnobirthing mother myself, I truly believe that it provides you with the tools to push any existing hesitations or fears aside, enabling you to have a enjoyable pregnancy and a calm and natural birth.
Birthing a baby into the world and becoming a mother is an extraordinary moment, and hypnobirthing allows this event to be positively anticipated and celebrated
